KARACHI: Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Murad Ali Shah on Monday approved an endowment fund worth one billion rupees for those affected by HIV and AIDS in the province.
The move comes after the recent outbreak of HIV in Larkana’s Ratodero area where more than 800 people have tested positive for the virus, around 650 of whom are children.
While talking to Hum News, spokesperson for the CM confirmed that the funds will be monitored by a six-member team that includes members from health and finance departments, the local MPA, HIV/AIDS expert and Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho.
According to the Terms of Reference (TORs), the committee will run awareness campaigns to help overcome the stigma and dishonour associated with the disease, and will distribute required medicines among those affected.
The committee has also been given rights to investing these funds wherever it deems appropriate and spending any subsequent profits in a transparent manner.
