July 12, 2019

ISLAMABAD: After Islamabad High Court acting Chief Justice Amir Farooq recommended to the law ministry to remove accountability court judge Arshad Malik over the leaked video controversy, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice-President Maryam demanded on Friday that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s conviction (by judge Malik) be declared null and void.

“The decision to remove the judge (Arshad Malik) means the august apex judiciary has openly accepted facts. If so, how could the verdict be upheld which has been handed down by the judge? If the judge has been penalized, why the innocent Nawaz Sharif not being released, who had been convicted by the (same) judge,” she said in a tweet.

Yet in another tweet, Maryam Nawaz said: “If a judge has been found guilty of misconduct, how can Nawaz Sharif be punished who faced the very misconduct in the hands of the judge.”

She said that the removal of the judge was not the issue but it was the very judgement which has to be taken off from the court record. Maryam asked the top judiciary to provide her justice by acquitting her father of fabricated charges.

The PML-N social media wing also uploaded a post saying: “Nawaz Sharif stands vindicated today. His patience, his resilience and his trust in Allah has paid a dividend. The judgment made by Arshad Malik stands null and void today and should immediately be quashed.”

While talking to Hum News, PML-N leader Zubair Umar said that the removal of Judge Arshad Malik lent credence to their view that the former premier had been convicted under highly controversial and scandalous circumstances. He said that this was the beginning and more episodes have to follow in the shape of disclosures.

Pakistan People’s Party leader Qamar Zaman Kaira told Hum News that “the mover and shakers should realize that their plans and strategies hit bottlenecks, after every now and then, and they should let they the political system work without being manoeuvred.” He said that the removal of judge Malik was a good decision on the part of the high court.
